Early Monday mornings at the gym.

Monday morning alarms are tough. So tough in fact that it takes three snooze buttons to actually get me out of bed. I finally crawled out from the warmth and comfort at 5:20 am and drove to the gym for some cross training and strength work. The days are already getting shorter and when it is still dark outside it is hard to be motivated to workout. Once I get going it’s all good but that Monday morning alarm is like a slap in the face.

I started to get my sweat on with a 5 minute treadmill walk warm-up. I hopped on the stair climber where I thought I would get most of my cardio done until I realized the TV didn’t work. Ya right, that was not happening. I stayed on for 5 minutes and then did the elliptical for 40 minutes. I finished my cardio with 5 minutes on the Jacob’s ladder. That 5 minutes produced the same amount of sweat that the other 50 minutes of cardio did.

I did 35 minutes of weights and found a new favourite core/arm move. I got into a raised plank on a step (hands on the step, feet on the ground). I held a 5 lb. weight in one arm and raised that arm out to the side until it was parallel to the ground. I did a few reps of this arm raise and then switched arms. Core burner and arm burner – it felt great! Planks are my weakness so when I can focus on something else (like arm lateral raises) while doing it, I can hold it for longer!

You could probably tell by my post yesterday that I was really craving pancakes after my long run. Those definitely happened.

In the beginning of July, when we went to Manitoba, we had a professional photographer take family portraits of us. My grandma LOVES when the family is all together so she wanted to capture it. We got the photos a few weeks later so I thought I would share some of my favourites. Some of these relatives were just here visiting and I miss them already!

I really hope they come and visit again… soon. I also hope planks will be easier one day. I guess I just have to keep doing them. Adding mountain climbers or lateral raises will be my strategy to distract myself from the fact that I am doing a plank! My mom is amazing at planks and she can hold it forever. That woman has mad core strength. Would it be socially acceptable to do planks during my 12 hour Monday work day?

Planks – love ’em or hate ’em?

Have YOU ever had family portraits done?
