What another beautiful weekend in the Rockies! I swear I don’t go to the mountains that often but everyone I talk to says, “Weren’t you just there?” and “How often do you travel there?” It had already been two weeks since my last visit. 😉 The weather was not as stellar as last time but there is truly no bad weekend in Banff. Even a cold and rainy weekend has a magical mountain energy.
I spend Saturday driving to Canmore, then cycling the Legacy Trail from Canmore to Banff and back again. It was FREEZING but as always, a beautiful stretch of trail. I started at 16 degrees in Canmore and it ended up being 4 degrees in Banff! Talk about numb toes! I headed to a hotel room in Canmore, showered (basically stood under the hot water until I could feel my extremities again), and then drove to Banff to meet my friend Shawn for mexican at Magpie & Stump. We met up with four more of his friends and spent the evening talking running, race-cations, and wildlife. 😉
The 10K race starts first, at 8am, so I met Jo and her guy at 7:30am to pick up my bib from her and get ready for the race! It was raining at the start of the race but stopped within the first 15 minutes of our race! It made for a muddy and fun run! The course was super fun, just two quick laps around the town along the river, and I settled into a decent pace, finding my groove in an 8:00 min/mile. I felt myself slow a bit towards the end but pulled off a 51:31 finish!
Jo had a speedy finish of 47 minutes and placed first in her division! Her guy ran a 1:40 half, and my friend Shawn pulled off a 2:56 marathon! All in all, I am incredibly proud of my friends and I don’t think we could have asked for a better race day!
Jo, her guy, and I changed and went for lunch at Park before wandering Banff a bit. It’s always nice to walk around a bit after a race before sitting in a car. It was pretty chilly in Banff, especially once that post-sweat chill sets in, so we kept our wandering short and I hit the road home shortly after. I loved hanging with these two… ARE THEY THE CUTEST OR WHAT.
I stopped to pee in Canmore (because let’s not forget this girl can’t make it 20 minutes into a road trip without a pee break) and grabbed another coffee, as well as a treat for the road. I got back to St. Albert just in time to play the last half of my recreation sports league kickball game. It was a whirlwind trip, but such a great race, and even better time spent with friends!
